Words Matter: Learn the Vocabulary of Racism

In order to do any type of work to confront racism on either a micro or macro level, we must educate ourselves about history, social customs and culture, and about our individual and collective roles that support it. One organization doing amazing work in the Muslim community on the important topic of racial justice is MuslimARC.

The Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative is a human rights education organization. Their work consists of raising awareness and training Muslim communities on the internalized, interpersonal, and institutional aspects of racism. The organization conducts training and worships across the U.S. and also stands in solidarity with oppressed people across the globe.

MuslimARC has produced a must-read glossary of 71 terms associated with racism and anti-racist work. From Advocacy to Xenophobia, these words describe policies and practices that are connected to racist history and attempts to thwart bigotry and dismantle institutional racism. Check out the list and educate yourself and your family.
