Over one billion people worldwide live on $1 a day on ramadan food. And that includes everything not just food. Those of us blessed to enjoy a table full of a variety of foods when we break our fasts perhaps don’t consider this.
We must establish organizations devoted specifically to ending slavery in all forms, and develop coalitions with women’s organizations that are already fighting rape and slavery. American Muslims with personal ties to the Muslim world can also provide leadership in these countries to root out this evil wherever it exists.
I thank God for Diouf and I pray for more scholars like her, not just for the extraordinary quality of groundbreaking research but for its timing also. Hardly a few months pass by when someone does not blame Islam for the continued slavery in Africa.
During Dr.King's life, racism against African-pAmericans was America's greatest sin, and since then we have come a long way in making amends. But as Muslims, we are aware that the struggle against injustice must be taken up in every generation.
It is so important that all stakeholders in the Muslim community, parents, teachers, Imams and Muslim artists be aware of mental health issues, understand the phenomenon, and make an effort to deal with it.
