The Impact of Generational Trauma on Muslim Children

By Wendy Díaz

With islamophobia running rampant worldwide and many Muslim families fleeing from countries that have been invaded, colonized, and destabilized, we should be aware of the impacts that trauma can potentially have on our future generations and work to counter its negative effects. Read more about the challenges and also how we can concentrate on Islamic guidance to bring about positive change.

 Parenting Tip

Becoming a Mindful Parent

By Umm Ahmed

Mindful parenting does not mean being a perfect parent. In fact, it acknowledges and takes into consideration the many aspects of parenting - how we often get overwhelmed by responsibilities, the day-to-day stresses tied to a gazillion things, and finding the right fit between your parenting style and your child's personality, and more. It also recognizes that when it comes to parenting, there is no one definition of a “good parent” and no such thing as failure. Included in this article are four steps to becoming a mindful parent:

  1. Know yourself.
  2. Understand the developing brain.
  3. Be emotionally present for your child.
  4. Forge a plan.

Hadith

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said,

“Beware. Every one of you is a shepherd and everyone is answerable with regards to his flock… A man is a guardian over the members of his family and shall be questioned about them. A woman is a guardian over the household of her husband and his children and shall be questioned about them…”

Statistics On Parenting

  • 62% of U.S. adults surveyed reported experiencing at least one adversity during childhood.
  • ACEs are even higher for socioeconomically and racially diverse populations, with nearly 70% reporting at least one ACE.
  • ACEs are associated with 5 of the leading 10 causes of death in the U.S. including heart disease, cancer, respiratory disease, diabetes, and suicide.
  • Immigrant families face physical and financial challenges as well as social and emotional challenges with acculturation, particularly when there are vast differences in cultures and trauma associated with the move.
