"O you Children of Adam! We have bestowed on you raiment to cover your shame as well as to be an adornment to you. But the raiment of righteousness, that is the best. Such are among the Signs of Allah, that they may receive admonition.” (Quran 7:26)
“And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear therof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, or their brothers' sons or their sisters' sons, or their women or the servants whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex, and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O you Believers, turn you all together towards Allah, that you may attain Bliss.” (Quran 24:31).
“O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks close round them (when they go abroad). That will be better, so that they may be recognised and not annoyed. Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.” (Quran 33:59).

Interpretation is left to the individual
But this is not the case at all.. correct me if I am wrong. Interpretation is not left for the individual. Interpretation is done by clergy men, who interpret for 'others'. People are not allowed to see with their own eyes or hear with their own ears.
If people were really taught to investigate their understanding of truth by themselves, then there would be no veils that keep them from understanding their reality. Unfortunately those intermediaries exist. Every human being is created equal. They all have minds to reason for themselves. There are no people who were created better to interpret on someone else's behalf.

This is a response to those people who are trying to learn what the Holy Quran has to say about Hijab, for the non muslims who say that in the Holy Quran it tells women must cover their bosoms but not the whole face, so why do muslim women cover their entire body, the answer is simple, the holy prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of allmight Allah be upon him), said "i leave to 2 things behind that is the holy Quran and my sunnah (way of Life) who ever follows these 2 will never go astray, so i advice the muslims and non muslims to not only look at the Holy Quran but also the way of the righteous people of the time of the blessed prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of all mighty Allah be upon him), and hopefully this will clear up any doubts.

correction: the prophet said I leave behind two weighty things - the holy Quran and My Family, whoever follows them will be saved ..... You mentioned about prophet leaving behind "my Sunnah" this isn't written anywhere and is a misconception or even a fabrication of the truth .

he headcover was something that women wore in Arabia before Islam. However, they would not cover their chests, thus revealing that part of their bodies. The Quran is asking women to take their headcover (Khimar in Arabic) and to use it to cover their chests as well.It's like telling someone "tuck in your shirt". Since you are already wearing a shirt, just tuck in one part of it. The order presupposes the fact that an individual is wearing a shirt. Similarly the Quranic injunction is presupposing the wearing of the headcover.

@ chamini, Kandy, You are correct. Covering the bossom's is all I get from it also. The problem with Islam is that there is no Head of the faith, and as such interpretation is handed down by anyone who is considered an Imam. Ambiguity runs rampant!

I am a revert in Islam a year back and I am wearing a full face viel. As for the question what we muslims should do to let our non muslim brothers and sisters see the light in Islam is to make ourselves submissive to the course of Allah (SWT). In this way we will be able to display the true light of Islam by practicing good deeds like, charity, soft spoken, refraining from back biting specially for women, showing kindness inside and outside of our homes, be respectfull to everyone, be modest, and be contented with what Allah (SWT) sustained us. In this way I believe that the light of Islam will shine naturally because a MUslim is doing what Allah(SWT) has commanded us to do. Assalamu Alaikum! There are lot of non muslims, who are anxious to know about Hijab, its extent, its significance, and its importance. Some say that why muslims women should not copy the sisters (NUNS) in the churches, which is also quite all right.
