American Muslims and the patriotism puzzle

In this newsletter

Assalamu alaikum:

This Fourth of July, we need to ask: Where do American Muslims fit in the patriotism puzzle?

We enjoy the security, safety, freedom of religion, and material comforts of our nation.

But what have we done to become true patriots, to speak up for it, and against it when it is taking the wrong course?

As political polarization worsens the divide between Americans, the definition of patriotism has gotten muddled, with the right arguing in favor of less criticism of our nation, and the left arguing for more.

But Muslims are ordered to be people of the “middle path”, Ummatun Wasata in Arabic. How can we balance these two trends as we maintain our love and commitment to God and country?

This Fourth of July we must assess our patriotism and ask ourselves: What kind of commitment to America will benefit our children, our fellow Americans, the world, and us? Which patriotism can we espouse and be accountable for when we meet our Maker?

Peace,

Become a Middle Path Patriot
As a Muslim in America, an American-Muslim or Muslim-American (however you define yourself), your patriotism has probably been suspect for quite a while.

July 4th - Reconciling History, Relieving Hearts

As America celebrates the Fourth of July, now is a time to connect and truly acknowledge and empathize with the story, experiences, realities and contribution of all Americans.

Becoming A Truly Patriotic American Muslim This Fourth of July

What does being a truly patriotic American Muslim mean today? Is it unquestioning love of country? Is it unquestioning criticism of country? Or is it something in between?

Friday Talks with Imam Abdul Malik Mujahid

Imam Abdul Malik Mujahid has been consistently giving Khutbas every Friday since the lockdown due to COVID began. Although many Masjids have reopened, not everyone has access to the learning opportunity that Khutbas offer, which is why he has continued to offer them. This week’s topic will be
“Enjoining Good & Forbidding Evil: Amr bil Maroof & Nahi anil Munkar" Watch it here.

*** If your masjid is open for Juma with social distancing, that is where you want to be. However, if you cannot, then watch virtual Khutba and then offer with family Zuhr salat together. .
