Re: Hafsa Nafees and religious holiday this week

Dear Ms. Jones:

I am the mother of Hafsa Nafees, who is in your fourth grade class. Hafsa has been enjoying school and learning under your supervision. We hope she continues to do so throughout the rest of the school year. I would like to bring to your attention the issue of Eid ul-Fitr, a Muslim religious holiday, expected to fall at the end of next week.

As you may know, Muslims were fasting during most of August, which was when the month of Ramadan fell this year. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It is notable for its emphasis on seeking closeness to God through fasting, prayer and charity.

Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan. It is a religious holiday and a time of joy and celebration.

Because the Islamic calendar follows the lunar calendar and actual sighting of the moon is often used to determine the date of occasions like Eid ul-Fitr, there is a possibility the religious holiday could fall on Thursday September 9, 2010 or Friday September 10, 2010 this year.

In view of this, we would like to inform you that Hafsa will be absent from school on the Thursday or Friday that is Eid-ul-Fitr. I would appreciate if you could give Hafsa her schoolwork in advance for that day, so that she does not miss any important work during her absence.

If you have any concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to contact me in the daytime at my office at (123) 555-7890 or in the evenings after 7 p.m. at home at (123) 555-3456.

Thank you for your  time and attention.

Sincerely,

Ms. Nadia Sheikh

Alhamdilliah this letter will help alot of people at school to get off Eid. Also I think we as muslims in the west are starting to stand up for ourselfs and defend our selfs after sleeping for decades.Allah is the greatest.

Mashallah it's a good letter, which I used myself this year. Was wondering if someone can advise how to handle higher grades (6th onwards) who don't have a regular class teacher.

Jazak Allah for making the effort, the letter has just the information for the Eid, which I wanted the school to know.

Alhamdulillah...that letter is worded beautifully. As an American convert whose mother is an elementary school teacher, I cannot think of better wording for such a letter insha'Allah. Allahu alim. May Allah(swt) accept all our prayers and our fasting this and each Ramadan. Ameen.
