McDonald's Corporate Responsibility &
American Muslims' Civic Responsibility
What is in My Apple Pie?
- McDonald's is as American as Apple Pie
- But what is in my Apple Pie?
- McDonald's Apple Pie has L-cysteine!
- What is L-cysteine?
- A chemical, of course!
- But according to one of the organizations to which McDonald's is offering
cy pres funds, 99% L-cysteine in America was extracted from human hair…yuck!
- Dunkin Donuts recently changed the use of this chemical in their products.
- What is the source of McDonald's L-cysteine?
- McDonald's uses L-cysteine at least in four of their products including
Cinnamon Rolls and Tortilla
- If McDonald's L-cysteine is derived from human hair, we urge you to please
stop this practice as soon as possible. [In an email after this presentation
was delivered, McDonald's has stated that they do not use L-cysteine extracted
from human hair.]

Comment: A very articulate and compelling presentation. My suggestion is to play with market competition forces and approach a "smaller" company, rather than McDonald's to try implementing a halal menu.
In particular, perhaps existing franchisees of a McDonald's competitor could band together with a business proposal to try to take the risk, as it were, of offering a halal menu.
Instead of fighting the giant, why not just ignore them. After all, Muslims are already boycotting McDonalds. I have no intention of going back, even if they offer a halal menu. It would be too little too late as far as this young, professional Muslim family is concerned.

| Something to Ask... | O Allah! I ask You by every name that You have, that You have called Yourself by, that You have taught any of Your Creation, that You have revealed in Your Book, or that You may have kept secret with Yourself. Make the Quran the spring of my heart, the light of my breast, the dispeller of my sorrows, the eraser of my anxieties and worries. |
