Mediation Tips for Imams

Be Impartial, Yet Empathetic

When mediating conflict between two parties, establish from the beginning that you are not there to take sides, but are solely interested in helping resolve the conflict so that both parties are satisfied.

However, being impartial does not mean to be cold. Display empathy, attention and respect for both sides. Instead of telling one of the combatants that he is being unreasonable, or to try to control himself—which both sides could interpret as a wish to side with one side or the other—reassure them that you understand the party's position, and you will do everything within your power to address the concerns he has raised. Use the same approach for either party.
