THE CONTROVERSY
SURROUNDING AL SAFA

As As Safa Grows So Does Opposition to it [The Latest]
Controversy around Al-Safa's Halal continues [Third article]
Al Safa and ISNA break ties [Second article]
Muslim Consumers of the non Muslim Halal Business [First article]

Al Safa is a non-Muslim owned meat company which has been producing Halal meat products for the Muslim community in North America for the past few years.

The emergence of this Jewish owned company as probably the major single player in the halal meat market is a bold step in the eyes of its Halal certifier, the Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America (IFANCA) while controversial in the eyes of many Muslims for a number of reasons.

Although on the face of it is a religious and a business issue, the complexity of relationship between the Muslim and Jewish communities seem to play a role in this controversy as well. Muslims and Jews are both minority groups in North America who are seeking to preserve their beliefs and identities while both communities by and large support the conflicting agenda of Israel and Palestine.

Kosher laws do not allow eating the meat of Gentiles (non-Jews), whereas Islam allows Muslims to eat Kosher meat. Because of this reason Muslims are emerging as the major consumer of Kosher products outside the Jewish community. Some Muslims in the industry are raising the reciprocity issue here, since Jews are getting Muslim dollars, while Halal is not getting Jewish money.

The Islamic law deals with the technical process of Halal meat but it does not dwell on the ownership issue of the Halal meat.

Sound Vision's section on Halal and Healthy requests all sides on the issue to discuss it in a manner that is respectful to all. With this in mind we invite you to post your comments in our discussion board of Halal and Healthy.

Comment: It's not true that Muslim can eat Kosher meat/food. Muslim, like Jew, can only eat Halal meat/food. Certainly in emergency situation the preference will go to the Kosher first before others. But MUslim who think he/she doesn't need to bother whether it is halal or kosher and vice versa and eats Kosher while thinking it's halal is not well informed.

Comment: I am of the opinion that Muslims in America should become the forerunners in the establishment of a genuine organic halal online distributorship of food items; meat, poultry etc. There should be a national call to all Muslims to participate in this endeavour. Until such an initiative is launched we should refrain from eating all meats(excluding seafood) and meat related products. There are myriad sources that can be utilized for our protein needs such as: tofu, beans, legumes and nuts in addition to seafood. Let's face it we must be prepared to make a sacrifice at some point during this continuing controversy. The bottom line is that everyone seems to be after one thing and that is MONEY BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY! If we would just stop for a moment and put this issue before Allah SWT to guide us, then the outcome will evidently be a slam-dunk success. We can no longer allow our appetites to dictate our health and our lives. We need to perform sawm more frequently and consume less animal meat. Let us enjoy the succulence of meats on our Eids and other SPECIAL occasions. Instead, let us consume more vegetables, seafood and proteins from other halal sources. May Allah SWT guide us in our efforts to please HIM. Salaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
