A sample press release for Eid

Eid prayers are a great opportunity to talk about Islam and get media coverage for it. One way of doing this is by putting together and sending out a press release to media outlets in your town or city. Here is a sample you can easily put together to invite the media to Eid prayers arranged by your local mosque.

WHO: Muslims in Chicago, Illinois and the US

WHAT: Will be celebrating the Islamic holiday of Eid-ul-Adha with over 1 billion Muslims worldwide. (There are about 6 million Muslims in the US including converts from the African-American, Latin-American and Caucasian-American communities. Many of these converts are women).

HOW: With congregational prayers in halls and stadiums across the city and states, social gatherings and food and meat distribution to the needy.

Saturday February 23, 2002 at 9:00 a.m.

WHERE: Smith Stadium (1600 Drummond street, downtown Chicago, corner Oxford)

WHY: Eid ul-Adha is how Muslims commemorate Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael at God's command.

CONTACT: To arrange media coverage of this occasion, please contact Ali Smith, media relations coordinator of the Sunnah mosque in downtown Chicago:

Telephone: (123) 456-7890
Cell: (123) 321-9876
Mosque: (123) 567-8901
E-mail: eidmediacommittee@hotmail.com

-While Eid prayer will be held on February 23, festivities will take place between February 22 and February 25. As well, please note that every year, Eid-ul-Adha coincides with Hajj, a pilgrimage Muslims must make to Mecca, in Saudi Arabia which is a religious obligation. This year, the peak day for Hajj will be February 22 (which is the ninth day of the Islamic month in which Hajj is performed, known in Arabic as Zul Hijjah).

-Since this is a prayer service, media professionals who will be attending, both men and women, are asked to dress modestly (i.e. no short shorts or skirts, tank tops, etc.). Women reporters, photographers and/or camera women may be asked to cover their hair with a scarf while at the prayer service.

Surah Ayah
Something to Ask...
My Rubb,
I beg of you good that lies in this night and good that follows it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil that lies in this night and from the evil of that which follows it. My Rubb! I seek refuge in You from lethargy and the misery of old age. O Allah! I seek Your Protection from the torment of Hell-fire and the punishment of the grave.
