Comment:It is only upper caste people from India who comment in these blogs and say "there is no untouchablity in India" .Ask somebody who is living this hell there.BTW majority of them are poor and don't have computers probably to answer these blog questions.

Comment:Your use of statistics is self-serving and distorted. You say that the Serbs killed 200,000 "Bosnians." Your implication is that Bosnians are all Muslim. This is rubbish. There are Serbian Bosnians, Croation Bosnians, and Muslim Bosnians. The 200,000 dead that you quote were Serbs, Muslims and Croations killed in a civil war in which each ethnic group were victims as well as perpetrators. You clearly know absolutely nothing about this conflict. Here is another conflict you should have mentioned - the civil war in Sudan. An Arab-Islamist government tried to force Islamic law on the Christian and Animist tribes of the South, and when they resisted, the government slaughtered 2 million of them. But this doesn't quite fit into the "Muslims are always victims" paradigm, does it?

Comment:Many facts on India which have been cited are incorrect. There is no untouchability in India today. It is like saying slavery exists in the United States!

Comment:To Mike112: While I agree with you that there have been significant strides toward racial equality since 1964, there is still entrenched racism that can be seen in small pockets here and there. African-Americans have and continue to seize the opportunities available to them in the United States. Consider just educational success: http://www.jbhe.com/features/52_degree-attainments.html But there remain barriers and discrimination that must be removed to improve life for African-Americans in general. For example, there is still tremendous job discrimination against this community, even though rejecting someone for employment based on race is illegal: http://www2.asanet.org/media/jobdiscrimin.html Things will not get better until all Americans of all races work together to alleviate and challenge racism and discrimination, even when it is hidden and subtle, as much of it is today in the United States.

Comment:To Lakshmi and Indian: Please read this Human Rights Watch Report "India: Hidden Apartheid of Discrimination of Dalits". Dalits is the word for Untouchables. They continue to suffer in India, despite the country's rise as an emerging superpower: http://www.hrw.org/legacy/english/docs/2007/02/13/india15303.htm As for progress, yes India has been making much progress, but 50 million people go to sleep hungry in the nation every night, even as a rich middle class has developed there. About 80 percent of Indians live on less than $2 a day. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poverty_in_India So while India has made a number of great strides in financial prosperity for some of its population, it is still behind in terms of human development. I hope that it uses its success in the economic realm to move forward by relieving poverty and discrimination on a more aggressive level.

Comment:Why people live in the past. Past is gone by. There is nothing like untouchable in India. India is growing by leaps and bounds and making progress in every sphere of life. Please leave it alone. Do not give such falwed and skewd information. Please read and update yourself before putting anything like that in print.

Comment:I think a lot of facts are flawed, specially about India and the so called "Untouchables". The restrictions that untouchables have to face in India are things of long past. This no longer happens in India. In fact with all the reserved government jobs and college seats, they are sometimes more privileged than "non-untouchables". The definition of "verna" is also not right. The verna system was not based on the color of the skin but the type of your occupation: 1) Brahmans: People who pursued knowledge, 2) Kshatriyas: warriors or people who protected rest of the population, 3) Vaishyas: Bussinessmen, 4) Shudras: Servers, maids, janitors etc. who were later called "the uouchables". These social classes were divided for convinience, just like we have blue collar jobs, white collar jobs etc. It had nothing to do with your birth, you caste was decided upon by your profession. This was the original concept of the caste or verna system. This deteriorated in the middle ages when the Brahmans took advantage of the respect they received in the society because of their knowledge and declared themselves supirior to the other castes. Just like Europe when the church tried to keep everything under its control and squashed every other institution, the brahmans tried to exploit the "lower castes" in order to keep all the power with them. Comment:Your stastics are incorrect, especially the ones on crime against African Americans by whites as opposed to crimes against whites perpetrated by African Americans. There is equal opportunity for all races in the United States if the individual has the discipline and ambition to pursue it. America has been in motion towards race neutrality since 64, but far left radicals have not gotten the memo. Antiquated and divisive ideologies are the very anchor that prevents social progress in the United States. But even African Americans are beginning to see that living in the past to feed a political agenda is counterproductive to a society that has moved foreward.
