I think this piece was well written and covered most of the major points. However, I think we must be very careful in encouraging people to have "family friends."
Islam prohibits UNECCESSARY contact between men and women who are non mahram.
"It is okay to have individual friends of the same gender but couples must also make effort to have family friends so that they can socialize together." I guess I would need to talk to the author and find out what he/she really means by this, but the average reader would think this means, 2 or 3 families gathered around the dinner table all together for a big Eid dinner or something.
Please do not "Americanize" Islam. I kinda like it just the way it is!!! Thus why I converted.

(as stated in the above article under the heading "Faithful"). I have not found any evidence of this in my study.
